Welcome to the twitter world. It gets boring after about 6 days when you realize this is all just "AIM Away messages"
That was something my old roommate @shaybay1 said about twitter (on twitter). Its hilarious, and definitely true for some people. But not if you do it right.
Twitter is the best way for me to share information and thoughts with people I find interesting, and its an extremely powerful networking tool. I do communicate with my friends from college, but its become more of a way to meet people I didn't know previously. After a few months of casual banter, I have developed real friendships with some of them. Some of my favorite people are @larrysullivan; an actor in LA, and @paulludwig; a fellow chicagoan and blogger.
Through twitter I had a few exchanges with Jeff Rago, an entertainment reporter in LA. Jeff was in Chicago this week to work the BlogHer conference and invited me out with his friends last night. I thought to myself "whoa, is twitter actually working right now?" I was actually meeting people through the site.
And cool people I may add. Jeff was awesome. We went out for a few drinks at different bars talking about how the area had changed since he lived here (a Northwestern grad), how social media has integrated itself into our lives, and the different parts of the entertainment industry. It was one of the best nights I have had in a while.
Twitter works.

Nice post. I'm glad to hear you're settling in well to Chicago and. I don't know if you've heard of it but www.playfoursquare.com is supposed to be pretty sweet. There's a Chicago edition of it. If you're into this social media/gathering stuff, Four Square could definitely help you along. (I'd also love to read your review/thoughts of it since I'm not an iPhone user.)
Sigh, and all I've met is you. Why isn't mine working?
