A typical segment of So You Think You Can Dance, Season 5:
Cat introduces reel of rehearsals.
Female dancer and her overly gay, obnoxious partner see the choreographer. They hug. Choreographer introduces the theme of the routine which will be a highly emotional subject, like: cancer, an abused woman, addiction, rape, pedophilia, bestiality, circus molestation, or a boob job.
Dancers perform routine filled with collapsing, tossing, and struggle. The 98% female audience cheers and gasps.
LIL C: I think we misunderestimated your ability to technicalize. Its really something to have been seen. Its that emotion in your reverberation, quite restounding.
M. MURPHY (crying): I love this choreography. Choreography, choreography, choreography. Did I mention I just loved the choreography.
Audience begins to sob
N. LYTHGOE: I first want to say how good this choreographer is. We are so glad to have them! It is so nice to see such powerful subjects being portrayed on the show! I also want to thank Tyce Diorio and Mia Michaels, even though they didn't choreograph this. We were nominated for 4 emmys this year, and I have to say I am going to be shocked if this isn't nominated. For an Emmy. Next Year. We might name the show So You Think You Can Emmy, I'm not sure yet though.
Cut to audience to see Tyce Diorio who making his nauseating crying face, while Mia Michaels eyelids narrow so tightly, they actually turn inside out.

7 people love this post:
Mary's comment would be more like, "I just love the choreography, YES I DO!"
I'm so over Nigel.
Dead on.
dont forget lil c pretending to know about fucking BALLROOM DANCING.
Wtf
Hahaha. You totally nailed it. I love this show but have been thinking lately how formulaic and self promoting it has become. There is so much back patting and chatter they should call it "So You Think You Can TALK ABOUT Dance".
HAHA! I can't help but chuckle at this. Anyone who watches this show knows that you are right on. Great post!
can't forget a) Lil' C thinking he knows things about ballroom dance, and b) Mary's tendency to speak to everyone like a puppy (You did it, YES YOU DID! Want a treat?)
Is it just me, or has Mary gone Paula on us?
Totally true. Plus don't forget that it's been about 3 seasons since Cat has actually said the word "judges" and by this time the audience is too stupid to realize why she stopped saying it in the first place and don't even imitate her British accent at ALL anymore.
But my biggest pet peeve of all is how Mary constantly says "Yes I do!" and "No he didn't!" and "Yes you do!" all of those redundant and pointless phrases after every single sentence.
Yet, we're still watching faithfully every single week.
